John M. Smith is currently Director of Business Development and the Small Business Center at Carteret Community College in Morehead City, NC, providing counseling, workshops, and courses in various areas of small business start-up and operations.  He attended East Carolina University and NC Wesleyan College before receiving his BA in Business Administration from NC Wesleyan.  He later attended NC State University and returned to East Carolina University where he earned a Masters Degree in Adult Education.

John has been member of the Rotary Club of Morehead City since 1986.  He served as Club President in 1999-2000 and in many other club positions.  He served as Lieutenant Governor (now Assistant Governor) in 2001-02.  He has also served as Grants Chair and other positions within Rotary District 7730.

His hobbies include astronomy, tennis, and family time with his children and grandchildren.  In 1974, he married Susan, who is the Registrar at Carteret Community College.  John is active in the Methodist Church serving as Chairman of Ushers, program coordinator for Methodist’s Men and upcoming Chairman of the Staff-Parish Committee.
