Bill and Sue were 4-H International
Exchange Students while in College. Sue represented
the 4-H clubs of
North Carolina
to
Australia
in 1951 and Bill represented the 4-H Clubs of
Pennsylvania
to
Switzerland
in 1949. While in their respective countries they lived
with farm families as members of their host families for
six months. Following the exchange program experience Sue
completed her degree at the
University
of
North Carolina
,
Greensboro
(Woman's College) and Bill completed his work on his
Bachelors degree at
Thiel
College
in
Greenville
,
Pennsylvania
and his Masters at
Penn
State
University
.
Bill and his partner Sue were married
in 1954 when he worked as a 4-H Club Agent in
Cape May County
,
New Jersey
. He was drafted into the Armed Forces in 1955
for two years and returned to
Cape May
County
until 1960 when he was asked to join the forerunner agency
to USAID. Bill and Sue and their two children traveled
to
Somalia
to work in the Agriculture Division of the local
Mission
for four years. They were then assigned to
Uganda
where Bill served as a program
officer. Bill and Sue transferred to
Washington
,
D.C.
in 1967. Bill was asked to join a six month accelerated
economics course in National Accounts and
International economics problems. Bill was then assigned
to the Africa Bureau Program Office in 1968. Bill was
then assigned to serve in
Vietnam
in 1971-73 as the Mission Evaluation Officer. On his
return to Washington Bill served as ! the Evaluation
Officer in the Bureau for Population and Humanitarian
Assistance. In 1977 Sue and Bill traveled to the
Philippines
where he served in the U.S. Director's Office for the
Asian Development Bank. Later they went to
Kenya
where Bill served as the
Mission
's Program officer. Their next assignment was Director of
the USAID Mission in
Sierra Leone
in 1983 and ultimately to
Ghana
in 1985 as Mission Director. Bill retired in
December 1986.
Bill and Sue were asked by the North
Carolina Extension Service in 1987 to serve as volunteer
coordinators for the 4-H International Exchange Program in
the State. Over a ten year period over 120 month-long
Japanese youths and 75 high school students were placed
with host families who were provided orientation.
Students were also provided orientation and periodic
visits. During this period about forty
North Carolina
4-H Youth traveled abroad to live with host families
for one month.
In the meantime Bill was asked to
join Rotary in 1989. He served as President of the Cary-Kildaire
Rotary Club in 1997-98. Bill served as secretary/treasurer
for the District Council in 1998-99 and District Governor
1999-2000. Bill served on the grants committee for a
number of years and is currently chair for that committee.
Bill participated in the multi-district orientation
program for Ambassadorial Scholars on Cultural
Understanding for several years. Bill brought the CART
program to the District in 1999.
Bill and Sue are members of
First
United
Methodist
Church
in
Cary
and are currently in a group that is writing memories. Sue
is active in the Woman's Club, Book Club and
Church Circle
. Bill has been active on the Foundation Board for the
International 4-H Youth Exchange organization for a number
of years. He has taught in Sunday School and in his spare
time managed to restore the 1934 Farmall 12 tractor that
"he grew up with" on a
Pennsylvania
dairy farm.
