Barbara E. Hargroves is an
Accountant and Owner & Operator of a Commercial
Real Estate firm in Abingdon, Virginia, specializing in
property ownership, development and management. Born in
Raton, New Mexico, and growing up in Longmont, Colorado, she
attended Colorado State College in Greeley and finished
her B.A. in history and political science at Emory &
Henry College in Emory, Virginia.
She then earned the M.S. degree in accounting from
Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
After working for several years in
public accounting in Reston and Abingdon, Barbara married
Andy and they began working together in commercial real
estate ownership, development and management in Abingdon.
They also owned The Hardware Company Restaurant for
over 18 years.
Barbara has been a member of the
Rotary Club of Abingdon since 1991, serving as president
in 1998-99. She
was an Assistant Governor in 2000-2002, and Governor in
2003-04. She
is active on the District level on many committees.
She and Andy participated in a Rotary Friendship
Exchange to Queensland, Australia, in 1999 and attended
the RI Convention in Singapore that year.
She has been to the Philippines 5 times presenting
books and computers to District 3780 and she and Andy went
with a group to South Africa that resulted in the World
Community Service Projects Fair held at District 7570’s
Conference in 2001. Barbara led a GSE team to Brazil in 2002.
Besides Singapore, she has also attended RI
conventions in San Antonio, Barcelona, Brisbane, Osaka,
Chicago, Copenhagen and Salt Lake City.
She is a member of the RI Finance Committee serving
a 3 year term, 2005-08, has been a President’s
Representative and has been a member of the Zones 33/34
Executive Committee.
Barbara and Andy are Major Donors, Sustainers and
Skelton Fellows. Barbara
is also a Benefactor and a member of The Bequest Society.
Andy is a member of the Rotary Club of Abingdon.
In addition to her Rotary work,
Barbara has been treasurer to The Barter Foundation and is
the treasurer to the Auxiliary to Johnston Memorial
Hospital and St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Johnston Memorial
Hospital where she is chair of the Building committee.
She and Andy have 4 children and 10 grandchildren.
