D.R. Butler is the Associate Athletic Director for Community Relations, Intercollegiate Athletic Department, George Mason University. D. R. was born and raised in Waxahachie, TX. He graduated with a BS Degree in Mathematics from Prairie View A & M University, Texas in 1955; earned a Masters Degree in Management from Central Michigan University in 1974; and a Doctorate degree in Public Administration from George Mason University in 1993. D.R. completed a career in the United States Army, retiring as a Full Colonel in 1986.

D.R. joined the Mount Vernon Rotary Club in 1981 and has served as its president twice; Rotary Years 1987-88 and 2005-06. He was District 7610 Governor rotary Year 1993-94. He has also served as Area Representative (now Assistant Governor); District Foundation Chair; District Scholarship Chair; District “Save Planet Earth Chair and District Public Relations Co-Chair. He is the recipient of the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service and the Rotary International “Service Above Self Award. He joined the faculty of the Rotary Leadership Institute in January 2007

D.R. and Jo (also a Rotarian), his wife of 52 years have resided in Alexandria, VA since 1969. They have four children; D.R. Jr who resides in Alexandria, VA; Carolyn who resides in Houston, TX; Barbara who resides in Stoughton, MA, and Katherine who resides in Austin, TX.  D.R. and Jo are both Paul Harris Fellows and members of the Rotary International Bequest Society.  D.R. is also a member of the District 7610 Paul Harris Society
