2007 Greenville SC RLI a Marquee Event!

December 1, 2007 (Greenville SC)  Eight Rotarians graduated from the RLI event held at the Hilton Hotel in Greenville, SC, on Dec. 1. They were among 44 participants from four districts. Anne Walker of Columbia, SC, the governor-elect from District 7770, was one of the graduates. The others, all from 7750, were Woody Barnes, Matt Edwards, Tom Faulkner, Sarah Swartz, Susan Wallace, PDG Rich Waugh, and Doug Wilhelm.

PDG Sue H. Poss, South Carolina Zone 33 RLI coordinator, was program chair. Facilities were arranged by Bert Strange, District 7750 RLI chair. In addition to the two South Carolina districts, participants came from 7680 in North Carolina and 6900 in Georgia.

Claudia Mertl of Jonesboro, GA, served as a facilitator for the first time and hopes to help get RLI underway in Georgia. Other facilitators included Rick Steadman of Cary, NC;  Bill Boyd of Pawleys Island, SC; Stan Cahn of Hilton Head, SC; Bruce Baker of Greer, SC; and Ed Hamilton of Clemson, SC.

District 7750 Governor Myles Golden and District Governor Nominee George Fletcher participated as students in Part 1. District Governor Elect Carol Burdette participated in Part 2. All three said they believe their participation in  and eventual completion of all three parts underscores the significance they place on RLI and its benefits to all Rotary leaders.

Having no RLI pins available to present to graduates, they were given “I Did It” ribbons at the luncheon.

Some of the recommendations and observations of the graduates: They liked the smaller class of eight in Part 3 much more than their Part 1 class of 15. They liked learning from each other rather than sitting through lectures. They liked having participants and facilitators from various districts to provide a broader, first-hand look at Rotary. They wanted more time at the lunch break to enjoy conversation around the table. They also mentioned that there was some repetition in the classes, which points to the importance of the need for facilitators to keep classes on topic as much as possible.
